Personal Injuries
Two years from the date of the accident or from the date you first became aware that you had been injured. The two-year clock is strict. Miss it and your claim is statute-barred. Always contact a solicitor as early as possible.
Most claims settle without a court hearing. Irish law requires most personal injury claims to go through the Injuries Resolution Board first. If the IRB releases the claim or assessment is not accepted, court proceedings can be issued, but settlement is still the most common outcome.
It depends on the injury type, severity, your recovery, and your financial losses. Ireland uses the Judicial Council’s Personal Injury Guidelines 2021 as the starting point for valuing claims. We give you a realistic range after reviewing your case.
You can still claim. Irish law allows for contributory negligence. Your compensation may be reduced in proportion to your share of responsibility, but the claim does not fail entirely.
The Injuries Resolution Board (formerly known as PIAB) is the independent statutory body that assesses most personal injury claims before they can go to court. We submit your application and handle all the correspondence.
Costs and Fees
Initial consultations are free for personal injury enquiries. For other matters we discuss the likely fee structure at the first meeting and confirm everything in writing before any work begins.
It is the formal fee notice that all Irish solicitors must give clients in contentious cases. It explains how fees will be calculated, the basis of charging, and any other costs. You receive one before any contentious work starts.
There may be outlays such as medical report fees, IRB fees, court filing fees, or expert reports. We discuss these in advance and many can be deferred until conclusion. You will not be surprised by costs.
Property and Conveyancing
A typical residential transaction takes eight to twelve weeks from offer accepted to keys handed over. Delays can come from mortgage approval, planning queries, or chain transactions. We keep things moving on our side and update you weekly.
Freehold means you own the property and the land outright with no time limit. Leasehold means you own a long-term right to use the property for a set period under a lease. Most Irish houses are freehold, most apartments are leasehold.
Yes. Conveyancing is regulated and requires a solicitor to handle contracts, searches, registration, and the transfer of funds. Banks will not release mortgage funds without a solicitor on record.
Family Law
A consent divorce where both parties agree on terms can be granted in nine to twelve months. Contested divorces take eighteen months to several years depending on the complexity of finances and any child arrangements.
Following the 2019 reform, the requirement is two years of living apart in the previous three. Living apart can include living separately under the same roof in defined circumstances.
A formal contract between separating spouses that sets out arrangements for finances, property, and children. It can be a useful step before divorce or stand alone where divorce is not yet sought.
Employment
Generally after twelve months continuous service. You have six months from the date of dismissal to lodge a complaint with the Workplace Relations Commission, extendable to twelve in exceptional circumstances. Read our Unfair Dismissal Guide.
You may have a claim if the redundancy was not genuine or if proper procedures were not followed. Statutory redundancy payments also apply where you have at least two years continuous service.
Wills and Probate
It is not a strict legal requirement, but a properly drafted will avoids ambiguity, ensures your wishes are valid under Irish succession law, and saves your family time and cost in probate. The fee is modest.
A straightforward grant of probate currently takes six to twelve months from application. Contested estates and those with complex assets can take longer. We manage the application end to end.
